Many homeowners spend thousands of euros on a stunning aluminium or PVC entrance door, choosing impressive panels, concealed hinges and 3- or 5-point locks. They feel safe - but they overlook a terrifying detail: if the burglar defeats the central cylinder, every locking point unlocks at once!
If your lock has a basic, cheap cylinder (the familiar "barrel" that protrudes slightly from the door), your home is practically wide open. Let's see how the attack works and how a security cylinder + Defender solves the problem for good.
Traditional European-profile cylinders have a huge structural weakness. Right in the middle, where the retaining screw passes through, the metal is extremely thin.
If the cylinder protrudes even 2–3 mm, the burglar grabs it with heavy pliers. One sharp side-to-side twist and the barrel snaps in half like spaghetti. He inserts a screwdriver into the hole, turns the mechanism - the door opens in 15–20 seconds.
If the cylinder doesn't protrude, the burglar uses a silent cordless drill and drills through the pin tumblers, destroying the cylinder in a few quiet minutes.
If your entrance door was fitted with a factory-standard €10 cylinder, it is vulnerable. Most fabricators install a "basic" barrel - ask yours what cylinder you have.
The first step is to replace the factory barrel with a certified security cylinder. The construction difference is dramatic.
Features hardened steel pins and bars (instead of brass). If the drill bit touches them, it breaks or slips - making drilling impossible.
The cleverest feature. The cylinder has a "snap line" scored into its front section. If the burglar grabs it, it breaks deliberately at that point, leaving the functional half deep inside the lock. The burglar is left with a useless sliver of metal - you can still unlock from inside.
Keys arrive in a sealed package with an Ownership Card. No locksmith can cut a duplicate without this card - no more worries when giving keys to tradespeople or house cleaners.
Even the best cylinder needs external protection. Enter the Defender - a solid, conical steel escutcheon (security rosette) mounted on the outside of the door.
It leaves only a narrow slit for the key. Because it is conical and smooth, the burglar's pliers cannot grip anywhere to apply force.
Inside the key slit sits a steel washer. If the burglar drills, the washer simply spins with the bit, neutralising the attack. A simple but ingenious principle.
