Special Screen Meshes: Pet-Screen (For Pets) & Anti-Pollen Filters

For most people, an insect screen has one purpose: keeping mosquitoes and flies out. But what happens when the problem does not fly but walks on four legs inside your own home? Or when the invisible enemy is spring pollen that turns your house into an allergy chamber?

The standard fibreglass mesh is excellent against insects but utterly inadequate for these special cases. A single cat claw can tear it like paper, and pollen passes through freely. The answer lies in specialised technical screen meshes.

1. Pet-Screen Mesh: The Ultimate Claw Shield

If you have a dog that scratches the screen to get out onto the balcony, or a cat that treats the screen as a climbing wall, you know the ordeal. The classic mesh tears, insects invade, and you pay a technician every few months for a mesh change.

Pet-Screen mesh - resistant to dog and cat claws

🔬 Construction

It is not ordinary fibreglass. It is an exceptionally thick weave of polyester coated with a heavy-duty PVC layer. Cat or dog claws simply slide off the surface. It is up to 7 times more resistant than a standard screen. It does not tear, does not stretch and does not puncture under daily use.

🐾 Animal Safety

Beyond saving you money on replacements, Pet-Screen acts as a strong safety net, preventing pets (especially cats) from falling off the balcony. It does not replace a certified safety mesh but offers an important extra layer of protection for your furry companions.

⚠️ Limitations

Due to its thickness, Pet-Screen is usually black or dark grey - it slightly reduces light and airflow. It does not fit roller (spring) screens because it cannot roll inside the cassette. It is ideally installed on hinged doors, fixed frames or sliding aluminium screens.

2. Anti-Pollen Mesh: Fresh Air Without Sneezing

Spring in Greece is wonderful - unless you are among the 20% of the population suffering from allergic rhinitis, asthma or pollen allergies. Opening a window in April means red eyes, sneezing fits and difficulty breathing.

Anti-pollen screen mesh - filters pollen and airborne particles

🔬 How It Works

This mesh is a "micro-weave" - its weave is incredibly dense. The openings are measured in micrometres, so they block not only mosquitoes but also airborne particles. Certified meshes retain up to 90-95% of pollen (pine, grass, olive), fungi, spores, dust and road soot.

⚠️ The Trade-Off

Physics is unforgiving: the smaller the holes, the less air passes through. The anti-pollen mesh noticeably reduces airflow. You will feel fresh air but forget about a strong breeze. It also collects dust on its outer surface quickly, requiring more frequent rinsing to avoid clogging.

✅ Compatibility

Unlike Pet-Screen, anti-pollen mesh can be installed on all screen types, including spring rollers. Its thickness is similar to standard fibreglass, so it rolls normally inside the cassette. Ideal for bedrooms and children's rooms of allergy sufferers.

3. Comparison: Pet-Screen vs Anti-Pollen vs Standard

Screen mesh comparison - fibreglass, pet-screen, anti-pollen

Each screen mesh was designed for a different purpose. There is no "best" option overall - only the one that matches your specific problem.

🔍 Fibreglass (Standard)

The basic, affordable choice. Excellent visibility, good airflow, lightweight. Ideal if you have no pets or allergies. Stops mosquitoes effectively but lets pollen pass freely. Tears easily from claws or sharp objects.

🐾 Pet-Screen

Triple thickness, 7× strength, tear-proof. Black/dark colour, reduced visibility. Does not fit rollers. Ideal for hinged/fixed screens in homes with dogs and cats that scratch or climb the mesh.

🌿 Anti-Pollen

Blocks 90-95% of particles, works as an air filter. Reduced airflow, needs frequent cleaning. Fits rollers. Essential in homes of allergy sufferers - especially bedrooms, living rooms and children's rooms.

💡 Summary: You do not need to adapt your life around the weaknesses of a basic screen. Upgrading to Pet-Screen or anti-pollen mesh is a highly targeted investment that solves real, everyday problems.
