☀️ Peeling from the Sun
The scorching summer sun dries out and cracks the varnish. Within 2-3 years, the surface begins to peel, leaving bare wood exposed to UV radiation.
There is no denying the unique charm of traditional wooden shutters. They evoke the grand mansions of the Greek islands, the stone chalets in the mountains and the elegant neoclassical buildings of Athens. They give a home character, warmth and a sense of "handcrafted" luxury.
But anyone who has lived with wooden exterior joinery knows the harsh reality first-hand: constant and expensive maintenance. Fortunately, modern materials technology has delivered the ultimate solution. Aluminium shutters marry the unbeatable traditional look with absolute durability over time.
Wood is a living organism. When exposed 365 days a year to the harsh Greek weather conditions, it suffers.
The scorching summer sun dries out and cracks the varnish. Within 2-3 years, the surface begins to peel, leaving bare wood exposed to UV radiation.
Winter moisture and rain soak into the material, causing swelling and rot (mould), especially at the bottom of the leaf where water collects.
Sudden temperature changes cause the wood to twist, making the leaves misalign and "catch" on the frame - losing their seal.
Every 2-3 years you need scraping, sanding, filling, fungicide treatment and fresh varnish. An exhausting and costly process - especially if you hire a tradesperson instead of doing it yourself.
Aluminium completely changes the rules. It is lightweight, rigid and - most importantly - never rusts or rots.
Through electrostatic painting and sublimation, the aluminium acquires the exact look, grain and texture of real wood - oak, walnut, mahogany, etc. It is impossible to tell the difference with the naked eye!
They require absolutely no sanding or painting. Ever. The electrostatic coating lasts decades without fading or peeling. A simple rinse with a garden hose is all it takes.
Ideal for seaside properties (where salt spray destroys everything) or for mountain homes with severe frost. For coastal areas, a special pre-treatment (Seaside Class) makes the finish impervious to salt.
Aluminium shutters come with multiple locks (up to 5 locking points) and heavy-duty profiles. Anti-burglar protection is far superior to wood.
Depending on your home's architecture and the available space, you can choose between two main categories.
Mounted on hinges and swing outward. They can be single-leaf, double-leaf or even four-leaf (bi-fold) for large balcony doors. They offer the ultimate traditional character.
They require clear wall space on both sides to fold back. They must be secured with wall stops (wind braces) to prevent banging. If they hit downpipes or wall lights, hinged shutters are unsuitable.
They move horizontally on tracks. They can be "pocket" style (hidden inside the wall) or "surface" (sliding parallel to the facade). They take up zero balcony space.
No risk of banging in the wind. Ideal for modern apartments where wall space is limited. An excellent choice for large balcony doors with a unified shading system.
Replacing your old wooden shutters with modern aluminium systems is an investment that pays for itself immediately through the money and time you'll save on maintenance.
Forget the €300-500 every 2-3 years for a woodworker per pair of shutters. Aluminium shutters recoup the initial investment in less than 10 years - and after that, every year is pure profit.
You preserve the full elegance of your home while gaining enhanced anti-burglar security, movable louvres for bioclimatic ventilation and total peace of mind from maintenance.
💡 Tip: If you're interested in rotating louvres (for ventilation and light control without opening the windows), read our next article on fixed vs movable louvres. The difference in everyday comfort is enormous!
