How to Clean a Pleated Screen Correctly Without Damaging the Cords

Pleated (accordion) screens are undoubtedly the most elegant insect protection system. However, their zigzag design acts like a magnet for dust, pollen, lint and cobwebs.

During seasonal cleaning, many homeowners make a fatal mistake: they treat the pleated screen like a shutter. They blast it with a pressure washer, scrub with stiff brushes and spray harsh chemicals. The result? The mesh warps, loses its shape, and the Kevlar cords snap. Damage from improper cleaning is NOT covered by any manufacturer warranty. Here is the correct method.

1. The "Anatomy" of a Pleated Screen: What Is at Risk

To clean correctly, you need to know what to protect at every part of the mechanism. Each component requires different care. Always begin by identifying the vulnerable points - especially the cords, which are the weakest link in the entire mechanism.

🧵 The Mesh (Polyester)

It has undergone special heat treatment at the factory to hold its zigzag shape. If you pull it roughly or pour hot water on it, the pleats distort and the screen no longer retracts properly. Irreversible damage.

🪢 The Cords (Kevlar/Vectran)

The thin, horizontal strings that hold the screen in position. If you scrub them with a stiff brush, they fray and snap. Replacing them requires a full kit change - it cannot be done at home.

🔧 The Bottom Track

The U-shaped channel on the floor collects grit, mud and hair. When the screen moves, the grime acts as sandpaper and gradually cuts the bottom cord. Cleaning the track is often more important than cleaning the mesh itself.

2. Step-by-Step Cleaning Guide

The process is simple, as long as you follow the correct order. You need only a vacuum cleaner, a sponge, lukewarm water and a little neutral soap.

Cleaning the bottom track of a pleated screen - dust removal

1️⃣ Dry Cleaning (Vacuum)

Never wet a dusty screen - it turns to mud between the pleats and dries as a crust. Leave the screen half-open so the pleats are visible. Attach the soft furniture brush to the vacuum, set it to low suction. Gently pass from top to bottom, following the direction of the pleats. Repeat 2-3 times per section until no dust is visible.

2️⃣ Bottom Track (Most Critical!)

Before washing the mesh, vacuum (narrow nozzle) all debris, grit, small leaves and pet hair from the bottom track. This is the secret to keeping your cords intact forever. The grime acts as an abrasive every time you close the screen - minimise it diligently.

3️⃣ Wash with Mild Soap

Lukewarm water (up to 30°C, never hot) + a few drops of neutral dish soap or green soap. Use a soft sponge (yellow side) or a microfibre cloth. Golden rule: always wipe vertically (top to bottom), following the pleats. Never horizontally, never against the mesh. There is no need to press hard - let the soap do the work.

4️⃣ Rinse & Dry

Rinse with clean water (watering can or hose on lowest pressure). Do NOT retract it while wet - mould will develop between the folds, leaving permanent black stains! Leave it open for a few hours to air-dry naturally. Choose a dry, sunny day (without strong wind) for cleaning.

🗓️ Cleaning Schedule

Ideally three times a year: end of March (before mosquito season starts), mid-July (removing pollen and dust) and early November (before the windows "close" for winter). If you live near unpaved roads or farmland, add one extra session in September.

3. Strictly Forbidden Practices

Pressure washer - FORBIDDEN on pleated screens

These practices cause irreversible damage that is not covered by any manufacturer warranty.

🚿 NO Pressure Washers

High-pressure water tears the mesh and destroys the cords instantly. Even "gentle" nozzles produce pressure far beyond what a pleated mesh can withstand.

🧪 NO Harsh Chemicals

Bleach, ammonia and strong degreasers destroy the polyester coating and weaken the cords. Use only neutral soap or green soap.

🪥 NO Stiff Brushes

Carpet brushes or stiff brooms fray the cords and damage the pleats. Use exclusively soft sponges or microfibre cloths.

💡 Summary: A pleated screen demands gentleness. 2-3 times a year, a proper, gentle clean is all it takes to keep the system running perfectly for many years.
