"I asked for a quote on minimal aluminium windows and they said €4,500 per square metre!" This is something we hear almost every day in our offices. The price of a minimal or frameless window can reach 3-5 times (or more) the cost of an equivalent, standard thermally broken aluminium system.
This enormous price difference is not simply down to "premium brand name" or design. You are not just paying for an elegant line. Behind the minimal look, there is an astonishing chain of specialised technical requirements that skyrocket the cost.
Let's conduct an honest "anatomy" of this price, explaining every individual factor that contributes to the cost.
In conventional windows, a glass pane 1 metre wide and 1.50 metres tall is a classic double-glazed energy unit, approximately 20-24 mm thick. In a minimal system, the glass pane measures 2.5×3 metres (≈7.5 m²) and is over 40 or even 50 mm thick.
These are not ordinary glass panes. Each sheet of glass is thermally toughened (tempered) and/or multilayered (laminated). This means special furnaces, controlled cooling and PVB safety interlayers. The quality standard is called 'Securit'.
Because the dimensions are enormous, these panes are produced in specialised factories (few in Europe), on dedicated "jumbo" production lines. They are transported in special trucks (glass racks) and their shipping insurance is critical.
In a minimal window, the aluminium does not mechanically hold the glass because in frameless systems the logic is reversed: the glass (structurally) holds the aluminium.
This bonding is performed at the factory, inside a controlled temperature and humidity environment, with special polyurethane adhesives (structural silicones) that must "cure" for several days before the glass unit can be transported. This specialised, manual work by certified technicians is expensive.
Forget the way a typical window is installed. A minimal system cannot be carried by hand.
A minimal window panel can weigh 500 or even 1,000 kg. Its installation requires a small crane and special glass vacuum cups that secure the pane.
Installation is carried out only by the manufacturer's approved, certified crews. In some cases, the manufacturer sends its own team from abroad.
Additionally, the project often includes the construction of flush tracks embedded in the floor, their waterproofing, and their connection to the drainage plumbing - work that does not exist at all in a conventional window installation.
For large-scale minimal windows, the cost breakdown looks approximately like this:
Jumbo glass (tempered, laminated, Low-E, argon-filled) accounts for nearly half the price of a minimal window.
Specialised extruded aluminium profiles, heavy-duty stainless steel rollers, concealed hinges, multipoint locking mechanisms.
Crane, vacuum cups, certified crews, flush track drainage pipework.
Specialised trucks, shipping insurance (the panes don't fit in lifts or stairwells), site access logistics.
There is no doubt that minimal windows are expensive. But now you know why. Their price is not arbitrary; it reflects exactly the engineering complexity, premium materials, and surgical precision in manufacture and installation. It is a high-value investment that fundamentally changes a building's relationship with the outdoor space, simultaneously elevating the property aesthetically, functionally and economically (resale value).
