1️⃣ Penetration
The active chemicals are absorbed deep into the wet pores of the concrete (they can travel tens of centimetres into the wall!).
When it comes to deep basements of major structures, tunnels, dams and swimming pools, engineers don't simply rely on membranes that can tear. They rely on Crystalline Waterproofing (Crystalline Waterproofing).
This is not another coating sitting on the wall surface. It is an advanced chemical treatment that changes the very structure of the concrete, turning the entire wall into a waterproof barrier!
Concrete, even when it looks perfectly solid, is full of microscopic, invisible tubes (capillaries) and pores. That's how water gets through. Crystalline waterproofing is a powder (a mix of special cements, quartz sand and active chemicals) that is mixed with water and brushed onto the wall.
The active chemicals are absorbed deep into the wet pores of the concrete (they can travel tens of centimetres into the wall!).
Inside the wall, these chemicals meet the water and the free calcium of the concrete.
A chemical reaction begins that creates millions of insoluble, needle-like crystals. These grow and completely block the pores and micro-cracks. Water can no longer pass, yet the wall continues to "breathe" (water vapour passes freely).
This is why crystalline technology costs a premium, but is worth every euro.
Say that after 5 years, an earthquake occurs. The basement concrete develops a hairline crack (up to 0.4 mm). Groundwater finds the opening and starts seeping in. With standard waterproofing, you would be scrambling for repairs.
With crystalline technology, you do nothing. The chemicals that have been lying "dormant" inside the wall, the moment they come into contact with the new water… "wake up"! A new cycle of crystallisation begins. Within a few days, new crystals grow inside the crack and seal it completely, automatically. The concrete heals itself!
Crystalline technology stands out for two unique advantages that no other waterproofing product can offer:
Because the crystals grow inside the wall, it doesn't matter which side the water comes from. You can brush the product from the inside (in the basement living room) and it will work its way outward to block garden water!
If you are building now, you don't even need to coat the wall afterwards! Crystalline material is available as a powder that is thrown directly into the concrete mixer during the pour. The resulting concrete is 100% waterproof "from birth" throughout its entire volume!
Our house has a deep basement. Three years after construction, a moderate earthquake hits. The building "settles" slightly and a basement wall develops a 0.3 mm hairline crack.
We applied a standard waterproofing membrane. The membrane tears along with the wall. In the next rains, water pours through the crack and the basement floor floods. We must excavate the wall to find the crack and seal it with epoxy resins. Cost and hassle.
We coated the wall with crystalline cementitious product (or added it to the concrete mixer). The crack forms and the first drops of water seep in. Within 48 hours, the seepage slows. Within 7 days, the crack has filled with a white substance (new crystals) and the leak stops entirely, by itself. The basement is saved without us lifting a finger.
Final Verdict: Crystalline waterproofing is the pinnacle of modern construction chemistry. It is the ultimate, permanent solution for basements with serious water problems, lift shafts and swimming pools. The material becomes an integral part of the building and protects the steel reinforcement for the entire lifespan of the concrete.
