⚡ Electrical Continuity
For the primer to work, zinc particles must be in contact with each other and the steel. This creates a circuit where zinc oxidises "sacrificing" itself to save the steel.
Real anti-corrosion armor is not based on simple coating, but on the electrochemical superiority of zinc over steel. The correct choice between Zinc-Rich and Zinc Phosphate determines the structural lifespan from 5 to 50 years.
The protection offered by zinc is cathodic. In the electromotive force series (EMF), zinc has a potential of ~ -0.76V, whereas iron is ~ -0.44V.

If the paint is scratched, the zinc oxidation products (oxides and carbonates) "self-heal" the wound, preventing rust creepage under the remaining film.
Not all "zinc paints" are equal. The difference lies in the concentration and the protection mechanism.
Provide galvanic protection. Strict Sa 2.5 (near-white metal) cleaning is mandatory to ensure electrical contact. This is the "industrial-grade" solution for C4/C5 environments.
Act primarily as barrier protection. Zinc phosphate pigments passivate the surface. They are more tolerant of cleaning imperfections (St 2/St 3) and ideal for urban settings.
The effectiveness of "cold galvanizing" depends on the Dry Film Thickness (DFT) and purity.
Zinc dust is heavy and settles quickly. Continuous mechanical agitation is required during application, otherwise the protection will be uneven.
Spray is ideal for welds and local repairs. For large areas, a brush "pushes" the material into the metal's pores, offering superior mechanical adhesion.
In industrial terms, a Zinc-Rich primer is the foundation of a Duplex system.
When the zinc primer is top-coated with epoxy and polyurethane, the structural lifespan multiplies (1.5x - 2.3x). The paint protects the zinc from premature consumption, and the zinc protects the steel where the paint is damaged.
