Eco-Certified Paints

"Eco-friendly paint" is often used as marketing. A paint isn't truly ecological just because the word is on the tin - real proof lies in official third-party certifications. Let's see what each one covers.

The Top 5 Certifications

Each certification examines different criteria - from chemical composition to circular economy:

Certification What It Tests Key Difference
EU Ecolabel "Daisy" Full life cycle - bans heavy metals, low VOCs/SVOCs Also tests performance (opacity + scrub resistance)
Blue Angel (Germany) Health, climate, water resources - minimal emissions Extremely strict on biocides & plasticisers
Cradle to Cradle (C2C) 5 axes: material health, circularity, climate, water, social fairness Unique: tests factory ethical/energy footprint
Indoor Air Comfort Gold TVOC at 3 & 28 days (≤ 300 µg/m³) Combines strictest criteria from all EU countries
M1 (Finland) Formaldehyde, ammonia + smell test by expert panel Unique: approves only if odour is acceptable

Which Certification for Which Room?

Each room has different needs - the right certification depends on the use:

Nursery / Children's Rooms

Indoor Air Comfort Gold or M1 (zero fumes) + EN 71-3 (safe if the child licks the wall).

Allergy Sufferers / Clinics

Blue Angel (extreme sensitivity to preservatives) or Allergy UK.

Exteriors / Living Rooms

EU Ecolabel - eco-friendly + resistance to sun, rain and scrubbing.

Green Buildings

Cradle to Cradle (C2C) - the only choice for an absolute green footprint at every production stage.

Technical Corner: Content vs Emissions

For engineers & specifiers (LEED, BREEAM, WELL) - two concepts often confused:

Infographic: VOC Content (g/L) vs VOC Emissions (µg/m³) - 2004/42/EC

VOC Content (g/L)

Directive 2004/42/EC. Solvent content in wet paint. Category A/a (matte interior) = 30 g/L. Legal requirement - NOT an eco advantage.

VOC Emissions (µg/m³)

ISO 16000 chamber - dry film emissions at 3 & 28 days. This is what building physics cares about.

Dual Compliance

LEED/BREEAM won't accept 2004/42/EC alone - they require Emissions Evaluation (Indoor Air Comfort Gold, TVOC ≤ 300 µg/m³).

Conclusion

Each certification serves a different purpose. For nurseries choose Indoor Air Comfort Gold + EN 71-3, for allergy sufferers Blue Angel, for general use EU Ecolabel and for green buildings Cradle to Cradle. The right certification = the right protection.
