🟢 C3 - Moderate Corrosion
Urban/light industrial areas, moderate pollution. Ideal for: demanding DIY projects, commercial buildings.
From a backyard metal canopy to coastal industrial plants - how to choose the right coating system based on corrosivity category.
To choose the right materials, you first need to understand the "hostile" environment:
Urban/light industrial areas, moderate pollution. Ideal for: demanding DIY projects, commercial buildings.
Industrial zones, coastal areas with moderate salinity, chemical plants. Ideal for: industrial facilities, bridges.
Heavy industry, marine (C5-M), offshore platforms, constant condensation. Strictly professional applications.
Success doesn't rely on a "magic" paint, but on the synergy of multiple layers.
In C4/C5, simple sanding is forbidden. Abrasive blasting (Sa 2.5) is required - complete rust removal + creating the roughness profile for primer adhesion.
Zinc Rich Epoxy - the zinc "sacrifices itself" (galvanic protection) to save the steel, even if the coat is scratched.
High-solids epoxy paint - adds thickness (microns) and blocks water and oxygen from penetrating.
2K Polyurethane - superior UV resistance, prevents chalking and fading.
The right approach depends on the environment and your skills:
No need for C5 specs on house railings. Angle grinder + 2K epoxy primer + polyurethane topcoat. Respect the recoat window religiously!
Mistakes cost. Follow DFT (microns) specifications. Check dew point before application. Use Airless sprayer + DFT gauge.
⚠️ Warning (C4/C5): Even if the metal looks clean, trapped chlorides will destroy the system from within. Salt cleaning before priming is essential.
Even the most expensive C5 system needs maintenance:
Look for rust "tears" or blistering at joints, sharp edges and welds - the first points of failure.
At coastal C4/C5-M installations, washing removes deposited salts and dramatically extends coating life.
Don't let damage spread. Sand the rust locally and apply primer + topcoat to seal the wound.
