Offices - Colour Psychology
Blue: trust, calm (accounting, meeting rooms). Yellow: creativity (art studios). Greige: timeless corporate profile.
Painting a commercial space isn't merely aesthetic - it's a strategic business decision. Colours affect productivity, customer psychology and maintenance costs. Because an office has different needs from a restaurant or a gym, let's break down the specifications by sector.
Two space categories with entirely different priorities:
Blue: trust, calm (accounting, meeting rooms). Yellow: creativity (art studios). Greige: timeless corporate profile.
Zero VOC: paint on Saturday, staff work Monday headache-free. Finish: Matte on main walls, Satin in corridors.
Light green (mint) and sky blue: symbolise health, reduce patient anxiety in waiting rooms.
Antimicrobial paints with silver ions: prevent bacteria and fungi. Class 1 scrub resistance for frequent disinfection.
Spaces with heavy mechanical wear, steam and strict regulations:
Red, orange, terracotta: proven to stimulate appetite and increase spending.
Dining area: Washable & Stain Resistant. Kitchen (HACCP): water-based epoxy or certified high-resistance acrylic only - standard matte is not allowed.
Red/orange in the weights area (adrenaline). Pastel/earthy in Yoga/Pilates (zen atmosphere).
Anti-Scuff: prevents black marks from rubber and equipment. Changing rooms/showers: anti-mould + anti-condensation.
Which properties each space type needs - a quick reference:
| Space | Finish | Key Technology | Colour Psychology |
|---|---|---|---|
| Offices | Matte / Satin | Zero VOC | Blue, Greige, Yellow |
| Healthcare | Satin Class 1 | Antimicrobial (Ag⁺) | Mint, Sky Blue |
| Dining Area | Satin/Eggshell | Stain Resistant | Red, Terracotta |
| Commercial Kitchen | Semi-gloss | Epoxy (HACCP) | - |
| Gyms | Satin | Anti-Scuff | Red / Pastel |
| Changing Rooms | Satin | Anti-Mould | Neutrals |
Two separate algorithms depending on the level of regulatory requirements:
Open during painting? → Zero VOC. Narrow corridors? → Satin Class 1 / Anti-Scuff. Natural light? → Dark OK · otherwise Warm Whites (LRV↑).
HACCP inspections? → Water-based epoxy (mandatory). Infection risk? → Antimicrobial paint. Heavy mechanical wear? → Class 1 Anti-Scuff Satin + consider two-tone (dark below, light above).
Every commercial space has unique needs - from Zero VOC offices to HACCP-compliant epoxy kitchens. Treat paint as a marketing, hygiene and cost-saving tool. The right choice reduces wear, boosts productivity and creates the right atmosphere for every audience.
