If you own a retail store, restaurant or supermarket, your window display and shelves are your most important sellers. But even if you have the best products, if customers see them through a "hazy," faded light, they'll just pass by.
In commercial lighting, light is not a functional output; it is a marketing tool. It has been proven in dozens of studies that the right lighting directs the eye, keeps customers longer in the store, reduces product returns (because customers see the true color in the fitting room) and, ultimately, increases sales.
The absolute "key" to achieving this is not how strong the light is (Watts or Lumens), but its quality. And this quality is measured with three letters: CRI. As engineers and lighting designers, let's see how you can make your products "steal" the show.
The Color Rendering Index (CRI) measures how realistically and naturally a light source renders the colors of objects, compared to the perfect light: sunlight.
The rating scale is from 0 to 100. Natural daylight has a CRI of 100. Under the sun, a red tomato looks crimson and luscious, and a blue shirt looks deep blue.
Most inexpensive commercial LED fixtures have a CRI of around 70 to 80. In a warehouse, this is perfectly acceptable. In a store, though, it's disastrous. Let's see why, with real examples:

A customer tries on a "burgundy" dress. In the test room (with bad CRI) it looks like a dull red-brown. He is not impressed and does not buy it. Or, even worse, he buys it, goes out into the sunlight, sees that the color is different than he thought, and returns it the next day.
Gold loses its luster and looks like cheap brass (bronze).
For professional retail lighting, the requirement is non-negotiable: All fixtures that "hit" merchandise must have a CRI > 90.
Tip: There are now Specialized LED Chips. If you have a bakery, there are special spots (Gold/Bakery LED) that highlight the golden color of the bread crust. If you have a fish shop, there are spots (Fish LED) that highlight the silver of the fish and the feeling of the ice!
The CRI shows the colors correctly, but how you catch the customer's eye depends on the Contrast.
A store "bathed" in abundant, uniform light everywhere (like a stadium) is boring. The eye does not know where to look. Retail lighting architecture is based on the creation of shadows and "islands of light".
Keep the light in the traffic corridors relatively low (eg 300 Lux).
Use powerful spotlights on magnetic tracks (Track lights) to "hit" the goods with force. The light on the garment or object should be 3 to 5 times stronger (eg 1000 - 1500 Lux) than the corridor light. This dramatic contrast unconsciously draws customers towards the product like a magnet.

It is the standard for supermarkets, pharmacies, sporting goods and electronics stores. It exudes cleanliness, alertness and honesty.
The next time you design your store, don't leave lighting for last and don't cut corners on it. Ask your supplier for fixtures (tracks, spots, strips) with a CRI greater than 90. Properly lit products look more expensive, more attractive and, in fact, sell themselves.
