  • Do you have night current? You set the hours, and the system automatically calculates another price in the morning and another in the evening.
  • Dynamic Tariffs (Nord Pool / Orange): This is where the platform shines. Through special Integrations, the HA "pulls" the electricity market prices from the Internet every day. If the price of electricity drops on a Sunday at noon, HA knows about it, and can turn on your water heater completely automatically when the electricity is cheaper!

4. What equipment do you need to get started?

To set up the Home Assistant (and the Energy Dashboard), the "brain" needs to be on 24/7. We don't put it on our laptop. The 3 most popular Hardware options are:

  1. Raspberry Pi 4 (or 5): The "classic" way. A computer the size of a credit card that uses minimal power (about 3-5 watts). You simply write the software to an SD card (or ideally a small SSD drive) and plug it in.
  2. Mini PC (eg with Intel N100 processor): The preference of Power Users. You are buying a used or new mini desktop (cost €100 - €150). It is much faster than Raspberry and can handle hundreds of automations and cameras without crashing.
  3. Home Assistant Green / Yellow: The ready-made, commercial devices (Plug & Play) from the same company Nabu Casa (which makes the HA). You take them out of the box, put them in the router, and they work, saving you from complicated settings.
