We've reached the end of Class D and our long guide. So far, we have talked about photovoltaics, hedging systems and algorithms that often require significant capital to implement.
But making your home energy efficient doesn't necessarily require thousands of euros. Your home's electrical panel—that metal or plastic box behind the front door—isn't just a safety mechanism. It is the control center of your expenses.
As engineers, we know that the best investments are those with the least risk and the fastest return on investment (ROI). Let's take a look at 5 highly targeted, "cheap" electrical upgrades (rail components) that cost under €100 each, but can pay for themselves in less than 12 months.
We have mentioned it several times, but it remains the number one electrical upgrade in Greece. The resistance of the electric water heater (4000W) is the absolute "black hole" of electricity if it is left open.

Through the Auto-Off function. You set it to _always_ turn off automatically after 30 or 40 minutes. The concept of "forgotten water heater" no longer exists.
If in the family you forget the water heater on at least 2 times a month for 3-4 hours more than necessary, you are throwing around €50-€60 a year. The smart relay pays for itself in about 8 to 10 months.
If you have lights in your garden, on your porch, or on your store sign, you probably use either photocells (which get dirty, damaged, or confused by car lights) or simple mechanical timers that you have to set over and over every time the season changes.
An Astronomical Timer.

This magical component has no photocell. You simply enter the GPS (Longitude & Latitude) coordinates of your home. It has a built-in algorithm that calculates to the minute when the sun sets and rises in your area, 365 days a year! It turns on the lights _exactly_ when it gets dark and turns them off _exactly_ at sunrise.
You save the wasted hours of lighting (eg the lights burning needlessly from 06:30 in the morning until you wake up to turn them off). Payback in 10 to 12 months.
As we pointed out in _Category C_, you can't control what you can't measure.

The meter itself does not cut power. But it works based on the psychological "Hawthorne effect" (people change behavior when they know they are being watched). By seeing your home's consumption live on your mobile, you become "energy conscious". You spot Vampire Power, shut down overlooked devices, and cut waste.
Studies show that simply installing a live meter drops an average household's consumption by 5-10% in the first year, simply because of a change in habits. Payback in 6 to 8 months.
This is the only addition that is not about reducing consumption (kWh), but about protecting your capital (CapEx).
A component called a SPD (Surge Protective Device) or "Lightning Suppressor", which fits next to the main switch on the panel.
~80€ - 120€ (for a single-phase panel).
The boards of modern devices (Inverter air conditioners, Smart TVs, Heat Pumps) are extremely sensitive. If a lightning strikes your neighborhood, or if the grid operator network makes a violent "surge" in voltage, the boards burn on the spot. The Surge Arrester acts like an "airbag": it absorbs the killer shock of thousands of Volts and safely conducts it to ground before it reaches your devices.
This is an insurance policy. Once it does its job over the course of a decade, saving you from changing the burnt board of a €1,000 TV, the ROI is instantaneous and astronomical.
We saw in the previous chapter the "Scenarios" (Routines) that do everything digitally. However, if you are not a fan of Smart Home and mobiles, you can achieve the same shielding absolutely "analog" (Hardware-based).
A powerful Relay (Contactor) inside the panel and a simple switch on the wall, right next to the front door of the house.

The electrician passes all the lines of the "wasteful" sockets (living room, office, TVs) over this relay. It leaves the fridge and alarm off. When you leave the house, you press the switch on the front door. That was it. The circuit "kills", guaranteed to "kill" all standby loads (Vampire Power).
By deleting standby loads (which often reach 60-80 Watts in total), you save over €100 per year. Payback in less than 6 months.
Upgrading a building does not require you to knock down walls. Start at your electrical panel. With a total cost that often does not exceed €250-€300 (materials and the fee of the licensed electrician) to install the above "shields", you shield your home against waste, negligence and network damage. It is, perhaps, the smartest investment you can make in your property.
