Balcony Photovoltaics (Plug & Play): Are they legal? How they are connected to the socket and what you should pay attention to

Until now, we have been talking about large installations on rooftops, roofs and basements. But the harsh reality is that over 60% of the population in major urban centers live in high-rise apartments, without any rooftop access. Does this mean they are excluded from producing their own, free energy?

The European market's answer to this problem is Balcony Photovoltaics (Plug & Play). In Germany and the Netherlands, there are already millions of such systems hanging from apartment railings. As engineers, we see this trend now sweeping Greece as well.

But is it as simple as buying a toaster and plugging it in? Let's see how they work, what the legislation says and what the security "traps" are.

1. What is "Plug & Play" and how does it work?

The logic of the system is subversively simple. A Photovoltaic Balcony kit usually consists of:

  1. 1 or 2 small panels (about 400W each).
  2. A Micro-Inverter, which screws right behind the panel.
  3. A cable that terminates in a classic male plug (Schuko).

How it works: Instead of calling an electrician to run wires up to the central panel, you simply hang the panels on the balcony and plug into any outdoor outlet in your home! The Micro-Inverter instantly syncs with the home grid and starts "pushing" current into the outlet. Because the current always follows the path of least resistance, this energy will not go to the DEDDIE. It will travel through the wires in the wall and be consumed directly by the nearest device that is working at the time (eg your fridge, router, TV on stand-by).

Unlike large rooftop systems, balcony solar isn't designed to drain your bill or heat your hot water heater. Their maximum power is usually up to 800 Watts.

Their goal is to "disappear" the so-called Base Load of the house. The main load is the electricity that burns your house when you are away at work: the refrigerator motor, the appliances on standby, the oven clock, the router. These "invisible" consumptions cost you €150 to €250 a year. Balcony solar takes over to fully cover these needs during the hours of sunshine, offering an extremely fast payback time (often under 4-5 years, due to their low purchase cost).

3. Are they legal in Greece? (The Legislation)

For many years there was a legal "vacuum", but now the landscape has become clearer, following the European directives.

Yes, they are perfectly legal, but they are not completely exempt from red tape.

  • The Power Limit: The legislation allows Plug & Play systems with a maximum inverter power of 800W.
  • The Process: A full Net Billing file is not required, but a Simple Notification / Update to DEDDIE is required.
  • Why do I have to declare it since it plugs in? DEDDIE must be aware of its existence for network security reasons and, above all, for your meter. If you have an old analog meter (dial clock) and your balcony produces more electricity than your refrigerator burns, the electricity will go out into the street. The clock will begin to turn back! This is considered power theft if not reported. Notifying the system, DEDDIE will come and install a new, digital meter.

The convenience of "Plug & Play" hides some risks that you should not ignore:

  1. The Safety of the Socket: It is absolutely forbidden to connect the photovoltaic to a multi-socket (taf) or old sockets. It must be plugged directly into a robust, waterproof (IP44 or IP54) outdoor socket on the balcony.
  2. Don't put too many together: If you buy three 800W kits and put them in the same line (in the same panel fuse), the wall wires will be overloaded. Law and common sense mandate one and only small system per residence.
  3. Air Hazard (Support): This is the most dangerous part. A panel acts like a ship's sail. Don't hang it from the 4th floor railing by tying it with... tie-wraps or cheap wires. You must use special, certified aluminum metal bases. If a 20kg panel comes off in a storm, the consequences will be criminal.
  4. Apartment Building Approval: Even though the balcony is yours, the exterior of the railings is often a shared facade element. Check the bylaws of the apartment building. In some cases, you may need the formal consent of the assembly to avoid complaints from neighbors about altering the aesthetics of the building.

Summarizing

Balcony Photovoltaics are the "democratization" of solar energy. It's the cheapest and easiest way to reduce your energy footprint and bill, without messing around with heavy crews, scaffolding and loans. As long as you follow the rules of static safety (solid support) and simple electrical logic, it is an excellent "green" investment for any apartment.
