In its simplest form, it can be a plastic flap behind the vent or on the outer grill. In more elaborate installations, it may be a separate fixture inside the air duct, with light leaves, a spring, or a special mechanism that opens with the flow and closes when it stops.

Its function is passive. It does not necessarily have a motor or electrical part. Reacts to air flow. This makes it simple and reliable, as long as it is properly dimensioned and clean.
