Why Do Lights Flicker When Another Appliance Starts? Voltage Drop and When It Signals a Wiring Problem

It is a familiar scene in many homes. The room lights are steady, then the air-conditioner compressor, washing machine or pump starts, and for a split second the lamps dip before returning to normal.

Many people assume that the installation is failing or that the supply is unstable. In reality, a brief dip is often normal. But persistent or exaggerated flicker can also be an early warning of poor connections, bad circuit design or utility-side voltage problems.

A loose terminal on a main breaker, feeder or neutral bar can create enough resistance to make the whole house voltage sag whenever current demand rises.

B. Shared Lighting and Socket Circuits

In older homes, lighting and socket loads may share the same circuit. When a heavy appliance starts on that line, the lamps on the same branch see the voltage drop directly.

C. Unbalanced Phase Loading

In three-phase properties, a heavy appliance may sit on the same phase as sensitive lighting while another phase is lightly loaded. Rebalancing the distribution can improve performance significantly.

D. Utility-Side Voltage Problem

Sometimes the issue lies upstream. Long feeder runs or weak neighbourhood infrastructure can leave the property with low baseline voltage, so every motor start creates a much larger visible dip.
